I'm back to my extremely obscure crossover BS.#Punpun is one of those series that falls under the category of 'Good! but I cannot responsibly recommend this to anyone."#If Dungeon Meshi is like a friend asking you to go on a quick errand and you accidently go on a life changing roadtrip -#Punpun is your friend asking to go on a quick errand and they pull up to the vet and tell you your dog is being put down.#Then they explode into sludge. Melting your car. You hitchhike back but the person who picked you up is an axe murderer.#I could not finish it. My friends who did say it was good. But agree it was for the best I did not finish it.#Hey speaking of tone twists...We are one episode away from one of my favourite chapters being animated!#WHO'S READY FOR THE SENSHI BACKSTORY! WHO IS READY TO CRY!#ME! I AM! I spooked my flatmate with how energetic I was this morning. I'm vibrating with energy I was not designed to contain.#I should talk about today's episode here: It was very good. I love how they animated the familiars.#And!!! Anime only people now are in the loop on the Chilchuck lore. Part 1 of many. He still contains multitudes.#They all do to be honest! Holiday Classics

Been thinking about Ford watching the 70s Animated Lord of the Rings Movies... (companion comic to this post!)

#the other two VHS tapes Fidd's is holding are Rankin-Bass' The Hobbit (1977) and Return of the King (1980)! The 70s animated pseudo-trilogy!#A lot of people pointed out on my other lotr 'crossover' post that Ford would have seen the 70s movies!#And i wont lie i entirely forgot they existed. But now i remember i have so many feelings on it okay. Ford my silly LOTR nerd #I dont think he would have seen Bashkis in theaters. far as I can tell it was a VERY limited (likely mostly CA) run in the middle of winter #but Rankin-Bass'? Aired on NBC & ABC. He absolutely woulda watched them or rented a VHS later. Which is why he's most excited by Bashki's #He's just such a nerd. I need him to nerd out. But also lowkey angst on how his single focus on bill/the portal lead #him to neglecting even the small things in life. I truly do think one of the largest pitfalls among the "media consumption is my passion" crowd is the tendency to treat characters as human beings with agency rather than narrative tools manipulated by the author

#as soon as you start assigning agency to characters any criticism of the series comes under strawman fallacy arguments #about how humans make irrational choices not always understood by others etc etc etc #thus insulating the author and the work from any sort of meaningful criticism or analysis #i think current popular advice on character writing overemphasizes relatability and likability at the expense of narrative relevance #it certainly isn't hurtful to do exercises where you think about their coffee order or favourite animal or preferred toilet paper brand #but none of that matters in the end if you have no idea what purpose a character is supposed to serve in a literary sense

Kakashi and Yamato Highlights from Naruto Retsuden:

Sasuke's narration putting Yamato being Kakashi's “partner” in quotation marks like it's a euphemism!!

Kakashi going into his interactions with Yamato with teasing about what an excellent ninja he is but also very genuinely reflecting on how powerful, humble and steadfast he is.

Yamato saying, “And there you go again,” suggesting Kakashi complimenting him is a frequent thing, and then telling Kakashi that since he's older he's not susceptible to flattery anymore but immediately smiling anyway and the narration saying he's happy to receive the compliments.

Kakashi immediately identifying how Yamato feels when their first combined jutsu doesn't work as intended: “You’re worried. I am too,” Kakashi said in a light tone, perhaps guessing at Yamato’s anxiety.

The implication from Sakura that Kakashi and Yamato will be late to the mission because they are taking a group nap from training too hard: “I guess they were up all night practicing. Said they used all their chakra and their energy, so they were dead asleep until just a little bit ago.”

The little stretches they do together after the group nap: Kakashi and Yamato had also arrived, but they looked sleepy, like they had just woken up. They were putting their backs together, pulling on each other’s arms, doing stretches.

Naruto's complete faith that his teachers will fix everything, even as a full-grown man, amidst a hailstorm while they're thousands of feet in the air. “No, we’ll be okay,” Naruto said to the Uchiha couple in front of and behind him. “Master Kakashi and Commander Yamato said they would handle it! I’m sure those two can make it work somehow.”

Yamato grinning at how he and Gaara both describe Kakashi and Naruto respectively with “As reckless as ever.”

finally rewatching utena after 8 years - i didn't finish it the 1st time and im determined to finish it now, im about 1/3 of the way in 👁 the series has a lot of themes like identity and idealism, that resonate with me more now that im older. definitely the kind of thing i can see myself drawing... also rewatching kaiba. can't wait for the waterworks!!

#i didn't finish it the 1st time bc school got in the way hahaha.#and i have to be in the right mood to watch certain series #diary #when i say i don't watch much anime this is what i mean haha. i pick something old and then i drag out watching it for 10 years #i should also rewatch penguindrum (same director as utena) sometime.. that anime i haven't seen in a big fat 12 years. so that should be fu #btw nanami is so great the 2nd time around. what an absolute riot #miki is also a new favourite of mine #oh yeah and juri's story twist also sucker punched me right in the gut. so subtle yet so strong..

I wish there were more mini series like Over the Garden Wall - short animated stories that are rich in atmosphere and character. Shows with only 10 episodes allow creators to tell tight, creative narratives without needing to stretch concepts out for too long. It would be great to see more animated miniseries that take advantage of the format to focus on quality over quantity. Shows like Over the Garden Wall prove what can be accomplished in just a few episodes, and I hope more people are willing to take risks on unique stories told in a mini series format.
